Education in Tanzania suffers from many issues related to poverty and lack of funding (read facts about education in Tanzania). The Desk and Chair Foundation strives to improve the situation by sponsoring many students in Tanzania, mainly in centres in Dar-Es-Salam and Mwanza. Among our initiatives are:

Sewing Classes at Bilal Centre

Heavily subsidised 6 months Government approved Vocational Education and Training

  • Authority (VETA) sewing classes
  • 6 months course
  • Qualified teacher – salary paid for by TDCF
  • Training materials etc paid for by TDCF
  • At present accomodating 63 students every 6 months
  • Number of students qualified to June 2004 is 15.
  • Number of students qualified to December 2004 is 63.
  • From 2005, expecting to train 120 students every year. Total cost per 1 student is £18/per 6 months course.

Computer Classes at Bilal Centre

From September 2005, we have now started Computer classes. Basic computing including Word, Excel, Power Point and internet is taught. The initial response is very good with at least 60 students enrolling and paying minimum fees of £2.50 per module.

Sponsoring Children at government approved Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA)

  • No capital investment for school required
  • No capital investment for equipment needed
  • Approved VETA colleges used
  • Wide ranging courses
  • Qualified teachers
  • Sponsors children who have failed Standard 7 or secondary school
  • Sponsor street children
  • TDCF has sponsored 50 students at Mirango Technical School doing vocational studies of Carpentry, Welding and Sewing. The course will start in January 2005 and will last 1 year. Total cost per student per year is £30.
  • TDCF has sponsored 50 students at Sengerema Technical School. 25 students will be in Day School and as students at Boarding School. Courses available are Carpentry, Electrical Wiring, Tailoring and Food Technology. Day School cost is £43 per year and Building School fees at £75 per year.
